Monoethylene glycol is commonly referred as ethylene glycon or MEG and is a colorless odorless liquid. It accounts for the largest share by volume demand among all ethylene glycol. It is hygroscopic and miscible in water in different proportions. The flash point of the liquid is at 111°C, while its boiling point and freezing points are 197°C and -13°C, respectively. Ethylene glycol is manufactured from ethylene through ethylene oxide which is the intermediate. Ethylene oxide reacts with water to obtain ethylene glycol. It is generally available in different grades such as polyester grade, high purity grade, antifreeze grade and industrial grade.

Monoethylene glycol is an organic compound which has wide applications. The chemical is used as a raw material in the production of polyester fibers. It is also used in the production of polyethylene terephthalate resins, which is used in the bottling industry. It is used as a dewatering agent in the natural gas industry in order to eliminate water vapor from natural gas before further processing. Apart from these, it is used in anti freeze and coolant materials, as a heat transfer fluid and as chemical intermediates. It is also used as a humecant in the manufacturing of textile fibers, glues, adhesives, leather, and paper. In the deep sea, pipes carrying natural gas are exposed to extreme cold temperature and a possibility of salt water corrosion.

Monoethylene glycol is introduced in the pipe lines so that it acts as an anti-freeze and anti-corrosion agent. Apart from these mainstream applications of monoethylene glycol, the chemical has several niche uses such as in the production of tobacco and tobacco products including additives, humecants, filters, paper and ink; fire extinguisher sprinkler system; as an ingredient in fuel used to warm food; manufacturing of munitions; as a deodorizer and air purifier by spraying as aerosol; in the production of deicers used on roads, pavements and aircraft lavatories. It is also used as a direct component in food, beverages, cosmetics and medicines made for human consumption and as a fluid for pressure testing of pipelines.

One of the major factors driving the growth in this market is the demand generated from fabric industry and PET bottle manufacturers. Majority of the industrial production of monoethylene glycol is consumed in these applications and the demand is expected to rise in the near future owing to high growth potential in beverage market as well as the fabric market across the globe. The maximum demand is expected to be generated from Asia Pacific due to the presence of manufacturing economies such as China, India and Indonesia. Another major application of the compound is as a medium of convective heat transfer. It is widely used in automobiles, liquid cooled computers and electronics, and geothermal heat pumps.



The compound is moderately toxic for human beings. However, ingestion of monoethylene glycol turns it to oxalic acid, which is very toxic and affects the central nervous system, heart and kidneys fatally if not treated quickly. The compound has not been listed as a carcinogen, but it causes throat and eye irritation on prolonged exposure to high aerosol concentrated atmosphere. Ethylene glycol is bio-degradable and causes little harm to aquatic organisms.
